The Gruppo Campanari di Arrone (GCA), or Bell Ringers Group of Arrone, with support from Italy’s National Federation of Bell Ringers, is coordinating the 14th annual massed ringing initiative to raise awareness and support for the cause of human rights. This year offers particular focus on the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as areas affected by natural disasters. 

Kickstart the holiday season with family-friendly festivities at the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon in beautiful Washington Park in Springfield, Illinois. Gather round a roaring bonfire, sing carols (led by Springfield High School’s “Seven & Senators”) from free songbooks, and listen to cascading melodies from above as the 67 bells ring out at the hands of carillonist Carlo van Ulft. With free cookies and hot cocoa under a decorated Christmas tree, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy!

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress issued a resolution establishing what was to become the U.S. Navy with “a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible despatch, for a cruise of three months….” 

Firefighters and police in southern New Jersey are asking the public for information on a missing bell, hours after it was stolen from the Pleasantville Fire Department. The bell, cast in 1909 at the Buckeye Bell Foundry in Cincinnati, Ohio, has given service to the community in Atlantic County for over a century.

A misty autumnal rain left no damper on the spirits this weekend as the National Bell Festival broke ground at the U.S. National Arboretum on a new Japanese structure for the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. Called a shōrō, the roofed but wall-less structure will offer protection to a sacred Japanese temple bell, called a hanshō, that was cast in 1798. 

Bells resounded this Patriot Day to mark 22 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed 2,996 Americans, including over 400 first responders, across four airplane crashes in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It was the worst attack against the United States homeland in our nation’s history. 

As the world's only truly global organization, the United Nations has become the foremost forum to address issues that transcend national boundaries – and there are few issues of greater import than peace. Peace in the world cannot be achieved by any one country alone. It is a task to which all should be committed. From time to time, it’s worth taking a moment to remind people of that.

This summer, perambulators along the National Mall will be treated to a veritable delight of artistic installations. On view from August 18 to September 18, the exhibition Beyond Granite, curated by the Trust for the National Mall, presents a new series of works designed to create a more inclusive, equitable, and representative commemorative landscape. The six featured contemporary artists are each responding to a central question: What stories remain untold on the National Mall?

The National Bell Festival invites bells across the nation to ring out this Labor Day in support of the countless women who worked on the home front during World War II. Collectively known as Rosies (from the Rosie the Riveter cultural icon), these women worked in factories, farms, shipyards, and more with one singular and united focus: to support, shorten, and win the war.
