Join Certified Forest Therapy Guide, naturalist, and Capital Nature co-founder Ana Ka’ahanui in a soothing exploration and mindfulness walk through the Olmsted Woods at Washington National Cathedral. As the Cathedral's 10 peal bells resound overhead under the direction of the Washington Ringing Society, Ana will lead us through a maze of tranquil footpaths to discover and grow our connection to nature.
What is forest bathing?
The practice of forest bathing started in Japan, where it’s called “shinrin-yoku.” By venturing into nature and absorbing with intention the surrounding sights, sounds, scents, and even tastes, forest bathers report lower stress hormones and increased cognitive function.
Is actual bathing involved? Nope – unless it rains, you won't get wet. Forest bathing is named because it's an immersive experience where practitioners fully interact with and appreciate the natural environment. The walk will be led by Ana Ka’ahanui, a certified forest bathing guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs, and a certified Virginia Master Naturalist.
Our walk will take us through the Olmsted Woods, the last vestige of an extensive oak and beech forest on Mount St. Alban – now the site of Washington National Cathedral and the three Cathedral Schools. The woods include a stone footpath, the Pilgrim Way, a contemplative circle, native wildflowers and shrubs, and a host of migratory birds.
Know before you go.
This is a small group activity and advanced registration is required. Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. We will keep to the well-trodden paths, but sticks and stones may form walking hazards. Pay attention to each step.
- Dress appropriately for the weather and the terrain, for moving slowly, and for sitting on the ground.
- A few lightweight stools will be on hand to lend, but consider bringing a yoga mat, waterproof cushion, or blanket for your comfort.
- Bring water!
- Apply insect repellent and sunscreen, as necessary.
- Wear a hat for sun protection, and bring an umbrella if rain is expected.
If you require special accommodation or have accessibility concerns, please contact us in advance.
